Sailing Lessons

Answer to our most frequently asked question:
Our Standard 5x learn to sail program costs P5600 for 5 days of lessons.
You make your own schedule. Days do not have to be consecutive.
You coordinate your schedule with Nestor Soriano at 09196010668
You pay at TLYC. There are also one day lesson packages.

One Day
Lessons

We teach different levels of students in different types of boats. We also have a one day program called "intro to sailing" which is a one day lesson that is like a "cruise" on a large Hobie, for a small group.
5 X Lessons

If you buy 5 lessons in advance, you get a discount off the regular one day rates, and you get free extras.

If you think you know how to sail, but you are not completely sure that you can handle our boats (especially the Hobie 16), we strongly suggest that you take lessons. It is better than just renting a boat.

One Day Sailing Lessons

The Courses- curiculum.

Basic Sailing- We use the US Sailing/ US Red Cross Program of 19 basic skills as a guide, and we use their books, their exams, and other training materials.

Intro to Speed
is a special group program. We take up to 6 people out on the Hobie 21 Sport Cruiser for the day, and teach everyone on board the basics of sailing. everybody gets to drive the boat and handle the sails. On very windy days, this is the only class we offer because the instructor is on the boat, instead of directing students from another boat following behind.  Price is P4200/day regardless of the number of students.

Basic Hobie
If you know how to sail, but you are not completely sure that you can handle the Hobie 16, we strongly suggest that you take lessons rather than just simply rent a boat. Look at it as "cheap insurance". If you capsize, and need assistance, and you are in the training program, you will not be charged for the rescue as long as you are within the "training area".
It costs P400/person for instruction. It costs P500 if we have to go and rescue you because you went out in a boat that you did not know how to right properly after a capsize. We hate rescuing people. Take a lesson. Its cheaper. In "Basic Hobie" one of the boys will go out with you for a while, and teach you the way the rudders lock, how to right the boat, and show you what performance level you should strive to achieve.

Teaching Method
We try to be very hands on in our approach, with a minimal amount of lecturing. We try to get you out on the water almost right away.

Scheduling
Nestor's cell phone is : 0919-6010668. Call him directly. If you just show up at the club, there is a good chance we can accomodate you on any given day, but if you want to be sure, its best to call.

1 day lesson charges:
Daily Basic sailing lessons cost P500 per person + the cost of the boat, + entrance fees. If you are alone, you can use the "training hut". If you come in a group, you will need to rent a hut for the rest of your group.

cost of the boat
It costs P1200 for a Topper or or a sunfish. these are designed as one man boats.
It costs  P3000 for a Hobie 16, a more advanced 2 man boat that is much faster. Since it carries 2 people, the per person cost is the same as the one man boat.
If you are a beginner, we strongly suggest that you start out in the one man boat so you learn more, with less problems.

Intro to Speed
P4200 per day.

5X "Learn to sail" packages

The Courses- curiculum
Basic Sailing- We use the US Sailing/ US Red Cross Program of 19 basic skills as a guide, and we use their books, their exams, and other training materials.
Intermediate dinghy sailing/ basic racing- click on this link http://www.sailing.org.ph/tlyc/intermediate.html

Teaching method:
We get you out on the water almost right away.
The first lecture takes about an hour, and we get into the water right after that. You will be sailing back and forth, by yourself, almost immediately, although a bit out of control.. By the second day you should be able to control the boat much better, and by the end of 5 sessions, 90% of students will be able to sail around with confidence. To get you to the level of "Basic Small Boat Sailor" as defined by the US Sailing Association, will usually take around 5 lessons, but you need to read the book and study it well to pass some items such as "rules of the road".

Most people want to "graduate" to the Hobie 16 as soon as possible. Sometimes this can be done as early as the third day usually, it happens by the 5th day.

Scheduling
We recently hired a very experienced sail training person full time. You can make your own schedule like you would with a golf or tennis pro. We try to limit lessons to 4 persons per instructor. Lessons and Exams are credited to your course of study.

If possible, you should try to  schedule your classes on weekdays, or Saturdays. Sundays are the most popular, therefore, the least desirable!

The 5X package Charges
The 5x packages cost less per day than taking 5 daily lessons.
It costs P5600 per person for 5 lesson days in the single man boats, including equipment and instructor. (compared to P1200/day + P100/day entry fee)
If you use the 2 man Hobies,  lessons still cost P5600/person, but  2 students share one boat.
If you want to use the Hobie by yourself, or with just the instructor, but without another student, the cost is P10,000 for 5 lessons.
see "limitations" below.

Free All 5x sailing classes entitle the student to a free class card to record your progress on the 19 required skills.

Extra (optional) Charges
1)The instruction book, "Start Sailing Right" may be purchasd separately.
2)If you are with a group, you will probably want to rent a hut for them. If you are alone, you can use the "training hut", but they can't.

Limitations to the 5 time bulk package.

1. Package deal at Php5,600 for five basic sailing session uses the small
boat. Topper, Escape, Sunfish and the  Mirror Dinghy.

2. The payment must be done in advance.  NO INSTALLAMENT BASIS.

3. The dates of the lessons are supposed to be listed by the person making the reservation. Students may reschedule at no extra cost  by giving 3 days advance notice. If the weather is bad, they can ask to reschedule even if its on the same day that the class is supposed to be.

4.The P4800 deal is good for 3 months only, unless approved by me to extend. You forfeit unused lessons after that period.

5. If you (1 person) want to learn to sail a 2 man hobie instead of the one man small dinghies, the 5 lesson package price is  P10,000.  Note that if 2 students sail on the Hobie, the price per package, per person, is still P5,600.

INCENTIVES The incentive to take classes now, is that the rates below impute a 50% special on instructors fees. Note:We reserve the right to bring the instructors fee from P400/day, back up to P800/day at any time.
All rescue fees are waived if you are taking part in a TLYC Class at the time of capsize.

Accomodations:
We are "Manila's best daytrip destination".  Using the Santa Rosa road to Tagaytay from South Super hwy, and then Ligaya drive, down to the lake, Makati to TLYC is an hour and a half (allocating Makati to Alabang as 30 mins).  95% of people come for the day.
There is accomodation all around TLYC, and you can pick and choose the places you'd like. Typically, rates are around P1500/night as of this writing. Plus we have camping

RESERVATIONS AND SCHEDULING As of this writing, reservations are now coordinated directly thru  the instructor, Nestor Soriano, at 0919-6010668. The Makati office (Peter Capotosto 8113183/3283) can still give basic info and updates, but it takes longer to coordinate because the Makati office still has to contact Talisay, and then get back to you.

Weather
Do not base your judgement of what the weather is (particularly rain) on Manila weather. Very often, the nicest days at TLYC are when its raining in Manila!!
You can get good advance weather prediction information from Peter Capotosto at 09178383726.
For up to the minute info on the actual weather at TLYC text Greg at 09196046197
