  • Tourism is  growing  in Talisay. To the tourist, Talisay is best known as the jump off point to trekking Taal Volcano. The number of places to stay has increased dramatically since 1997.
  • Traditionally, Talisay has been known for its successful nursery plantations.  All kinds of plants and trees are available at very reasonable prices.
  • Getting to Talisay, Batangas, is much easier now than ever before. The new road systems have practically made Talisay and Tagaytay suburbs of Manila. This has impacted positively on the local economy and has made real estate the coming opportunity.
  • The local government units are generally very receptive to new ideas, and are taking environmental and other growth issues seriously. Government works closely with business by supporting the formation of broad based business organizations to discuss the impact of new policies on the community.

  • Boat trips to the volcano can be arranged from several resorts, and can even be pre-booked at a discount by phone. Ask if guide services are included.   Boat hires can be per trip to the volcano, . Mostly, bancas are used, however, recently speedboats have become available, and these can also be rented by the hour. The standard price for a trip to the main crater is P1200. (te current exchange rate is about $1=P40)Boats can usually accomodate 8 people. Sailboats and kayaks can be rented by the hour.
  • There are several routes to climbing the main crater. Horseback rides on small ponies are a popular means of negotiating the main trail.  There are other craters including the "new" crater that is accessed on a surreal black sand lava flow that has active steam vents. Check the links page for actual experiences.
  • If you are just driving through Talisay, you can visit The Philippine volcanology station in Balas. There are some interesting dioramas there and friendly people you can talk to. Entry is free.
  • Trips to the different nurseries can be arranged easily. Prices are very low compared to Manila, or even other Batangas and Laguna towns.
  • There are several new restaurants in Talisay, and most of them serve the local delicacies. The tilapia is definitely the best deal. Its usually super fresh, and cheap. Fresh tilapia tastes very different from the frozen product.  Tawilis and Maliputo are fish found only in Taal Lake, and these are serious delicacies. You can try to fish for these if you want. But the market and the restaurants are easier.
  • Scuba diving is an often inquired about subject. There are whole towns that were submerged when the lake waters rose in the rainy seasons after the eruption in 1621.  We are still in a time of discovery. Very few have explored these towns because, as with all lakes, the silt is stirred up easily so visibility is low.

Tourism is a fast growing business because of the proximity to the growth areas of Manila, the new roads that have been built recently, and the deregulation of the communications industry.
Tourism establishments that are on the other side of the lake, ergo, much farther away from the capital, are overwhelmed during the tourist season. Conservative eyeball estimates would indicate growth in the Talisay tourism industry at 200% expansion per annum. And this trend is just beginning. As of now, almost all establishments can be considered "Mom and Pop" operations. One and two star pensionne type businesses would still be "top of the line" for Talisay.
Real Estate is a real sleeper. Real Estate in Talisay is ridiculously cheap compared to comparable real estate in Tagaytay. Tagaytay itself is a great investment because of Manila's expansion. It is estimated that Tagaytay will change its personality from being a resort town to a business suburb of Greater Manila within the next 8 years. Currently, good residential properties on the outskirts of Manila (Ayala Alabang) sell for P20,000/square meter. Tagaytay is around P8000-10,000. Talisay is only P1000-5000. When shopping for properties, make sure the property is titled.
Nursery Business.  Talisay soil is garden soil. Talisay is full of underemployed, experienced personel who know how to graft, marcot, and otherwise raise all kinds of plants for sale. Capital is the big requirement. Long run, areas used for the nursery business will be prime real estate properties. Environmentally friendly, an excellent business for the head, the heart, and the pocket.
Fish Culture is another local business that has been around for awhile. Profit margins are high, return on investment quick, unless you get hit by a natural calamity (not unusual). The business is highly regulated  because of the potential pollution factor, which is presently under study by several government and non-government bodies, and some international orgs. financed by the European Community (EC).

Overview
Talisay is one of the towns under the shadow of the volcano. It is the designated evacuation area, in case of eruption. It is about as safe as Tagaytay.
Although Taal appears to be a small volcano, it is actually huge. The foot of the volcano is Manila, and because of that, Manila is considered as one of the cities in the world with the highest risk. Taal is an active volcano.  So, its not a quesion of "if" the volcano will blow or not. Its a question of "when", and more importantly, "how strong will the eruption be?"  If its a really big eruption, Talisay will be the least of our worries. The entire Philippine economy will be a disaster.
Clearly, most of us bet that it won't be that strong, and in fact, we relish the idea of having a front seat at the fireworks show. Volcanology today is pretty accurate, and the Philippine Volcanologists are pretty good (they certainly get enough practice!) at predicting if there will be an eruption, and if it will be a really huge one(all that we need to worry about).  They always seem to be more conservative than any anyone else, so were in good hands. They have predicted all the recent eruptions, and some that didn't happen.
Although many people have been killed by the volcano (particularly in 1911), almost all have been killed on the island itself. Visiting the island is safe, but we wouldn't recommend living there.
Talisay is not accessible to a lava flow from the volcano, because of the 300ft deep lake between the two.
