Beach Catamaran Report:
by Peter Capotosto
The Beach Catamaran event was composed
mainly of Hobie 16s and sailors based at Taal Lake Yacht Club, but there
were a few very notable exceptions.
David Race, immediate Past Commodore
of Thailands Royal Varuna Yacht Club gave everyone a crack at trying to
beat the man who is #7 in the world in the Masters division.Tony Robinson,
Commodore of the Hong Kong Hobie Club, and eventual winner of the main Beach
Cat Event, showed everyone how it could be done.

In a stroke of what might be called
Poetic justice, Tony overtook David in the last race, and then just meters
from the finish, Mark "Port Start" Haswell snuck into second
to deliver the coup de grace to David's effort. The year before, Mark did
exactly the same thing, and Tony , who had been leading, lost the 1997
series to Peter Capotosto.

Other notable visitors were Scott
McCook and Alice Lim, probably the most renowned beach catamaran tandem
in the South East Asian region. And livening up the party, not to mention
the racing, were Tina Atkinson and Leonie Duson. International Hobie Cat
Association President Mark Pryke later graced the regatta as an IJ.
